2021 'Moyston Hills' Grampians Syrah

2021 'Moyston Hills' Grampians Syrah

First Release of our Moyston Hills Syrah!

Dark and Seductive.

We share with you the first single vineyard Syrah from our Moyston Hills vineyard - The first site we have leased and farmed ourselves, aiming to keep the organic practices the Robinsons established.

The 2021 Moyston Hills Vineyard Syrah is from a cooler season that avoided heat spikes and luckily avoided late season rains. Disease pressure was minimal and the vines delivered very small berries with exceptional flavours.

It was fermented with 30% whole bunches in open fermenters, pumped over only as needed and left on skins for four weeks. It was then run to 3000lt french oak foudre, along with a couple of older puncheons.

It shows explosive regional spice, black olive, dark chocolate and cassis with blackberry fruit flavours on the seductive palate. It's followed by fine, savoury persistent tannins and cleansing acidity to finish.

"30% whole bunches, natural fermentation, 20 days' skin contact, matured in new 3000L French oak. The Moyston Hills vineyard was the first Grampians vineyard that Rory Lane sourced fruit from. He now leases the vineyard and chooses to call the wine syrah because of its 'proper' syrah spice and perfume. It certainly projects plenty of the spicy stuff – pepper, fennel seed, bay leaf, rosemary – but there's more to laud. Works a fine-textured tannin riff through dark cherry, plum and dusty cacao, finishing with a lasting, gentle savouriness. Dances rather than glides. Delicious." - Jeni Port, Sept 2022

Wine Front Review August 2022

"As a rule The Story buys grapes in, usually on the back of long term relationships, but this wine comes from Rory Lane’s first venture into vineyard ownership. He’s bought grapes from this vineyard in the past, though over the past 10+ years it’s largely been contracted to Mount Langi Ghiran. He’s now running the vineyard organically. Exciting times. This release saw 30% whole bunches, wild ferment, three weeks on skins and maturation in 3000 litre foudre.

It’s deliciously (black) peppery and ripped with bright, berried fruit. If you like Grampians shiraz/syrah you will love this. It’s medium-bodied, bunchy, savoury and just all-around adult, though the fruit is perfectly well ripened and velvety with it. Walnut-edged tannins pull the curtain on a terrific show of pepper and fruit."
